Too often we under-estimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.
-- Dr. Felice Leonardo Buscaglia
Stockner's Nursery is a firm believer that success means nothing unless you give back to those who provided you with that success. We're a local company, and could never be where we are today after almost 30 years without business and support from our community.
Because of this, we have partnered with many groups, businesses and charities to give back. Not only does this benefit those receiving it, but it has also given our employees and staff an opportunity to experience the joy of helping others.
This page is dedicated to the different people we've had the pleasure of helping out. We've donated services & plant material, sponsored charitable events and volunteer on a regular basis. Our TWIGS Garden Center holds events where profits are donated to specific causes. We encourage others to actively get involved, it's up to us to make a difference!
- I would like to thank Stockner's Nursery for your support of this year's Summer Games. Our awards stands and Opening Ceremonies platform have never looked so good and the Special Olympics Athletes were truly excited to be awarded on such a beautiful stage! Also, please thank Cy and the rest of the crew for helping us load the truck – we could not have done it without them! Thank you as well for the plant and flower selections, they were perfect! - Carrie Dyer, Special Olympics Virginia
In addition to the Special Olympics, Stockner's Nursery also actively participates in the Walk MS Events hosted by the Central Virginia Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. There are three employees here with relatives who either have or had the disease. Renee McDowell, with Marketing/Sales here at Stockner's is the Committee Chairman for the event, and we have contributed a significant amount to make these events a success.
We're a nursery, so one of our favorite things to do is to help with beautification. The Northside Learning Center needed some sprucing up, so our team went in and planted some trees to help. Seeing the
children's reactions really hit home to our foreman and crew and was greatly appreciated by the folks at Northside.
- The kids on the playground were mesmerized and just stared at the guys putting in the trees. They kept talking about their big shovels and the big holes in the ground. A couple of our kids then went and found our toy shovels that we keep on the playground and started digging in dirt, too. Very cute to see! I really appreciate Stockner's doing this. :o)
Stockner's also recently provided services and donated plant material for 'Homes for Our Troops'. Army SSG Dwayne A. Cole was severely injured while deployed to Iraq in early 2007. A bullet that entered his neck at extremely close range lodged near his spinal column, leaving him a quadriplegic. Lifesaving measures enabled SSG Cole to be airlifted to Balad, Iraq and eventually to Walter Reed Army Medical Center where he began his journey to recovery during his six month stay. SSG Cole continues to work diligently to regain movement and function and has most recently had success rebuilding the muscles in his hands. He enjoys helping those less fortunate and one day hopes to
become a peer counselor for those with spinal cord injuries. He was living in a rented apartment with inaccessible bathrooms with his wife until our community got together and built him a brand new home at no charge to him.
Our company participated in the 'Buy Local, Give Local' campaign with Cox Radio, and also was a strong contributor in the 'Feed Richmond' campaign with the Central Virginia Food Bank. Stockner's provided vehicles, staff, and displays at each Kroger location to assist in raising funds for the Food Bank. We provided a money tree where donors were asked to donate money and place "Stockner Dollars' on the money tree, which in turn was matched by Stockner's Nursery. This was a great success for the Central Virginia Food Bank and we plan on continuing this tradition with them for years to come. We also have extended a promotion to our customers throughout the winter to donate a portion of their project to the Food Bank. We hope to do much more for our community and neighbors as we continue to grow.
